The Assistant’s Last Patient

cemetery-dark-death-782I know he will soon kill me, but I do not fear the man across the desk. In fact, he strikes me as the kind of sweet old codger you’d see feeding pigeons at the park. He nods patiently while I struggle to steady my trembling hand to sign his Waiver of Liability.

In moments I will walk away knowing the exact day, hour, and minute that my twice-broken heart, atrophied liver, and mountain of debt will cease being mine to ignore.
