Difficult Run

After the snow melts

 the river trumpets brutally, bitterly

and with a force of ten trains.

A granite slab—slick underwater and coarse above—

holds snug in its riverbed,

daring the river to carry it seaward

fleck by fleck.

This is a misery no one sees.
