A Thousand Days

starry nightBy Zoe McDonald

When my fruit falls, overripe,

When it wraps itself in dusk,

May I blink and see a sky burning with a thousand stars

And a sun fierce with the light of a thousand days –

May I taste this life in all its colours

And blister with the force of the world,

See it with all the clarity of a still pond

Or the sharp gasp of morning air –

May I tremble in all its greatness,

And may I burn with the lost fire

Of a thousand days left unexplored.
