Free

To fly as the gale decrees. Riding the wind currents, dipping into air pockets, twirling skirts that scatter rain drops. To spin, float and rush at bare branches, wheeee!  Free to flip up my skirt. No one to grab and force it down, to sigh in exasperation. No judgement. Free to get completely soaking wet, to break a rib or two. To spin any which way, free from the need to be useful. And finally, free from the hand that clutches at my handle. Holding me down, cower under me, avoiding the rain.

  1. The line, “Free to flip up my skirt. No one to grab and force it down,” speaks volumes. What a great way of phrasing “let me live my life.” Unfortunately, there are always those who try their best to grab and force others down. They should work on themselves, first.

  2. Wow, I read that three times and got three different points of view from it (all of which I found powerful and moving) until I finally realized who the narrator is. Very clever, and beautiful.

  3. I’m pretty sure this is from the perspective of an umbrella…. Which is amazing! I love this, your imagery is fantastic. I read this twice to make sure I really think it’s an umbrella (I hope so!). Great work
