The Fence

By Tyrean Martinson

The fence kept them out. That’s what her mommy said. It kept out the bad people, and it kept her safe from anyone except mommy and mommy’s friends. They told her she was a good girl, a beauty, that she could make them feel good if she just put her hands and her mouth where they wanted, and let her stick things inside her. It hurt, but if she cried, her mommy would lock her in the dark place. So, she didn’t cry. But, one night, after her mommy counted the money and left her alone, she climbed the fence.

  1. Poor child. So awful. The danger inside the fence infinitely worse than what lay outside it. I hope she climbed the fence and ran!
