The Aftermath

By Kaleiyah-P

The wind cools her shoulders. She scrunches the grass. The plain is wide and welcoming.

He wraps his arm around her. “Do you like it here?”

She scrunches even harder. “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

He smiles. A tear crawls down her face. He brings her closer.

“It’s all yours, my dear,” he says. “Forever. We can stay here as long as you like. There’s no more war. No more pain. No more suffering.”

She shakes her head. “Not for us. But somewhere out there, beyond the plain — Surely there must be.”

    1. Thank you so much for the kind words and reblog. I originally wrote the piece in January of 2014, but as you said, I do find its themes relevant to what’s happening today (especially with Syria). Yet at the same time, I find it sort of transcends time, too. Though I hope that one day, Earth will know a generation without wars and refugees of any kind.
