Fireworks

They laugh
Faces gleefully turned
up
To darkened sky
Brilliantly, momentarily lit
By explosions
Bursts of blues and reds
Golds and greens,
Rainbows of color
Eruptions of light
For hungry eyes
Deaf
To all
But their joy

Comfort shatters
Shaking breaths
Unsteady limbs
Down
Under
Take cover
Not even safe
from them
at
Home
Breathe in. Breathe out.
Each burst
A rent through
your heart
Leaping with each
BOOM
Shivering
at every silent moment
Waiting
for
the next
Firework

  1. Love and bubbles are like instant fireworks that once ignited can create many colors and sparks in the air and sky.

  2. Thank you for writing this — every year I have anxiety attacks when my neighbors shoot off fireworks. I made the mistake of saying something about this on the town bulletin board and the trolls were so rude I just deleted the post.

    1. Thank you, Sara. I’m glad this resonated with you. I’m also incredibly sorry but unfortunately not surprised to hear about your being harassed for saying something when you have every right to; apparently it’s perfectly okay to assault strangers in their own homes, as long as it involves fireworks.
I actually wrote this the night of July 3rd this year. It was the 4th night in the row of the neighbors setting off fireworks and I was dealing with anxiety attacks myself. It was 6 days total of intermittent fireworks with random scatterings the Saturday following the holiday…apparently because reasons?
