I found a grounded hawk,
Featherless and lost.
Though evening bore the shadows,
Help, it seemed, was neither
His to take nor mine to give.

Thanks! I’m reblogging to Fauna Park Tales where birds of prey are main characters in the series. The photo shows the look in the grounded hawk’s eyes perfectly, I think.

Such a poignant few lines, describing the helplessness of the viewer to save the distressed grounded hawk.

Thank you. I wrote this in 1975 while in Grad School when I lived in California. I have been a raptor rescuer and rehabilitator ever since.

Thanks again for that thought-provoking post. Unfortunately, my ‘help’ for the raptors only stretch to having them as characters in Fauna Park Tales Series – I weave their true stories into the imagined ones … so far there are eagle owls, martial eagles and brown ‘villainous vultures’ in the latest books. But these birds are really fascinating and it’s really sad to see how many of them are erroneously persecuted for doing what comes naturally. Well that’s the situation in many parts of Southern Africa. 🦅🦉🦅
