Different Meaning

By K.G. Anderson

Screw symbols. Put no faith in them.

That arrow, carved hastily — or artfully — into a tree? It points the way to your destination. Or lures you into a deadly ambush.

Those words, whispered urgently into your ear? Your thighs tremble. Your lips fall open. Your eyes close. Now feel the knife in your belly.

That bracelet with two silver hearts entwined? What it meant 50 years ago is not what it means now. Sad old woman still wearing the tarnished thing long after he’s gone.

He’s dead, surely?

Perhaps. But he left 42 years ago with someone else.
