Beat of a Drum

The drumbeat through the earphones sounds loudly in her eardrum. Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum … her body feels the vibrations. The man taps her on the shoulder to get her attention. She takes off her headphones. He speaks, “What are you listening to?” She points to her ears. The man repeats, “Yeah, what were you listening to?” She points again to her ears. The man repeats with slight agitation, “What were you listening to!?” She holds up a finger. She pulls out her phone and types something. She turns the phone to him reading: “Sorry, I’m deaf.”
