We Stood Together at the Shore

By Barry J. Vitcov

We stood together at the shore
Watching a pod of dolphins arc
Fondly opening memory’s door

Kept just beyond our common reach
The beach warming our bare feet
The gusting air cool and sweet

We review our lives
Pages of diaries filled with truths and lies
Far too often hellos and goodbyes

Our profiles have aged
We look at each other with older eyes
Our love still filled with loving whys

We find ourselves in the ocean’s view
I knew you better
When I didn’t know you

Barry J. Vitcov lives in Ashland, Oregon with his wife and two standard poodles. He says, “I wish I could say why I write, but I really don’t know. It’s so hard, yet something I feel that I need to do.”
