Guide to Captivity

By Shannon DeNatale

There’s a firefly in a jar somewhere,
glowing into glass
walls with possible confusion
and I really do not know
if this firefly knows
the freedom of humid summer nights
inside a tree’s blossomed branches
or that this was not necessarily supposed to happen,
that mason jar captures were never
predicted and inscribed in stone,
but lids seal shut regardless of fate
and fireflies exist everywhere in little homes,
unaware of mansions or of smarter glowing things.

“I write so that my future self can be a pieced-together being, and not small fragments of unclaimed memories.” – the writer
