In our predeparture training, Kieran and I learned that resilience is a space colonist’s best asset.
Since crashing on this rocky and desolate world, I repeat that lesson as a mantra. I repeated it to give myself hope as I tended to our seeds in the bent and tattered greenhouse.
I repeated it to stop myself from breaking down when those same seeds failed to sprout. I repeated it to ignore my gnawing hunger pains as I stretched our rations thinner, ever thinner.
Now I repeat it as I remove Kieran’s body from the chiller, knowing what I must do.
