Warm Nest

By Adil Al-Ma’mory
Translated from the Arabic by Essam M. Al-Jassim

From the moment I brought it home, my conscience had been killing me. I opened the door of the cage, believing that it would fly away. Bizarrely, it didn’t move from its perch. In fact, every time I extended my hand toward it, it drew back.

I pulled it forcefully by its wing and it struggled, clinging tightly. After a beat, I noticed it was squatting, and between its legs lay a small egg.

Essam M. Al-Jassim is a Saudi writer and translator. His translations have appeared in various online and print Arabic and English literary journals.
