There’s More Than One Way to Dance

By Jane Kaufman

I see him slouched by the campfire. I approach; he doesn’t look up. I move close to him, shoulder to shoulder, and share his silence. A small speaker plays in the background. I sway to the music. I bump my hip into his. I hold his hand as I twirl away, then twirl back. I shimmy and bounce against him while he stands stock still, allowing his arm to be pulled and pushed. He breaks and says with a giggle, “Are you having fun, honey, pretending we’re dancing?” I say with a laugh, “Are you having fun, pretending we’re not?”
