Bernard was off. He turned to wave before the road curved behind the trees, before disappearing around the bend. The others wandered back in twos and threes. Hanna stood alone, staring at the place he’d last been. When she turned around, that would be it. The saying-goodbye would be over and the living-without-him would have to begin. Hanna imagined the village behind her did not exist. Nothing was real but the road. The road that would bring Bernard back to her, if she froze there long enough, unbreathing, unblinking. Hoping.
She inhaled, blinking away the tears, and headed home.
Wow, very well done… isn’t it amazing how you can “feel” the hole someone leaves they they take that turn around the corner and are gone? It is a deep physical longing and pain… I, unfortunately, know it well. this says is so well, and the line, when she turned around, that would be it, a kind of acceptance of the inevitable loneliness… very moving. Thank you! And yes, I know what you mean. Being able to write from experience makes all that experience almost worth getting…

Very true. We are, after all, a compilation of our experiences, good and bad…

Captures the emotion and the setting very much like a poem does, the kind of poem that lingers and will not leave.

Thank you. That’s one of the reason I like writing short stories and poems, because you can take the time to whittle down every word and phrase to be just exactly what you mean and no more.

So much unsaid and left to the reader’s imagination. Really beautiful.

Thanks! I will admit that there is more that I might be saying later. Using this as a thought piece for a much longer story. Spoiler: don’t look for a happy ending for these two…

To capture a moment like this with some words is talent. Keep writing!
