Drive Faster

By Brad Rose

Everyone’s falling in love. It’s heart breaking. I’m just trying to get a foot in the door. I don’t have a business plan. Billy says mine are entry-level problems; that there is nothing to fear, but life itself. Yesterday, I was driving to work and saw a company slogan written on the tailgate of the truck ahead of me, “Get Rid of Unwanted Pests.” I worry about the future. In the end, all we will have will be what we once were. Today’s headline: “There are Methods to Make Shootings Appear Justified.” I turn up the music, drive faster.

When writing, I try to follow three precepts: “Every view of things that is not strange is false,” — Paul Valéry.” “The function of the imagination is not to make strange things settled, so much as to make settled things strange.” — GK Chesterton. “The ugly may be beautiful, but the pretty, never.” — Paul Gauguin.
