Where I’m From

Tell me where I’m from.
Explain the culture that made me,
the genes that gave me a kufi instead of shades.
Never been into meadowlarks or glades
yet I appreciate the romantics.
Poets that paved the way.

You see no one is born a slave,
but restricted humanity breeds partiality to your own kind.
Be careful what truths you accept into your mind.
If you let assumptions lead,
you might be disgusted by what you find.
Perhaps it’s semantics,
logical gymnastics that bind,
but if anyone could be summed up in one word it would be Human.

  1. Well said. In 1971 we moved from an affluent suburban ghetto in a large American city to undeveloped woods outside a small rural town. The few families that lived in these backwoods had been there since before our Civil War. We were the first “outsiders.” It was a culture shock for both us and them. I’ve come to believe that the gap between the poor and the affluent may be bigger than any national or ethnic differences.

  2. A motivating discussion is definitely worth
comment. I do believe that you need to publish more about this subject matter, it may not be a taboo matter but usually folks don’t discuss such subjects.
    To the next! Cheers!!
